Instagram launched its own custom font; its name is Instagram Sans.

And it looks like this:

Instagram Launched Its Own Custom Font

I find it cool, interesting, unique, intriguing, and carefully created.

Instagram’s logo inspired Instagram Sans as the officials said and “reflects the shape of the glyph and our commitment to simplicity and craft.”

The font is made out of squares and circles, or squircles as Instagram names them.

“Instagram Sans is our new, global typeface. The glyph and wordmark inspired this custom style that nods to our heritage.”

As you will see right away, Instagram Sans is not super easy to read but it looks great, I personally love it.

Instagram Sans design

Almost every letter is fully loaded with details and when you use this font to build a word, that word is instantly recognized as an Instagram Sans word.

And this is not simple to achieve, just think about it. Most fonts are extremely similar, and words using these fonts will not look special.

At least this happens to most fonts, even to the high-expensive and premium fonts.

This is exactly why Instagram worked hard to create this super interesting fully custom font.

Launching such a font is an act of courage from Instagram.

Do you agree?

Some letters look absolutely normal while others look a bit crowded.

At least in the combination with all the other letters, when they form a word.

I cannot imagine a whole sentence with this font, but this is not the scope of this font.

The font is heavily loaded with details and it makes any word look fantastic.

IInstagram Launched Its Own Custom Font – inside info

“Instagram Sans is a contemporary remix of grotesque and geometric styles. The type is designed with accessibility and global scripts at the core, able to express a range of styles in any language.”

“Details like sheared terminals that suggest the flick of a human hand, unexpected quirks seen in the “Q” and the interior teardrop of the “a” add a friendly personality.”

“The typeface letterforms are inspired by our iconic glyph. Circular motifs, titles, and punctuation marks further connect these two elements of our brand identity.”

“Inspired by our original wordmark from 2010, and the update in 2013, we’ve developed a more contemporary approach based on our new grotesk typeface.”

As you see, Instagram team invested lots of time and resources to create their own fully custom font.

The result is impressive, most of the people loving how Instagram Sans looks and how it enhances Instagram design.

What other changes is Instagram preparing?

Instagram Sans is not the only big thing that the huge company is launching in this period.

The social media platform Instagram is also making important changes to its layout and design.

It becomes extremely clear that social media channels are reinventing themselves. People are starting to become bored and not pay attention anymore to social media ads.

And this has a huge impact on social media platforms, absolutely all of them.

The bad thing for them is that this is not the only major problem they have, but also many other types of issues – like governmental problems, tax problems, etc.

Conclusions

Instagram Sans is a nice upgrade to Instagram, making the social media channel much more unique and memorable than it was.

As we can all notice these days, the world is putting more and more accent on fonts.

They create their own custom fonts, they let you customize the text so you can read it with ease, and even more.

They even launch variable fonts like Google Roboto Flex, and much more.

Companies carefully analyze the power of fonts and they do lots of tests to improve design.

Instagram shocks the world by adding a font similar to a hated one, why did they do that?

The team added a font that looks very similar to a font that is super hated in the world. It seems like a terrible bad move for a huge corporation like Instagram.

You probably know which is the most hated font in the history, right? You will find the answer below.

Its name is Comic Sans and it isn’t bad at all (when used correctly) but it gathered huge hate from all over the world.

Two typographers, Holly and David Combs, started a “Ban Comic Sans” movement in 2002, just imagine that. Others designers joined and the movement gained worldwide traction. Who can ban a font that is 100% legal?

Who took the decision at Instagram to introduce this font? Did Instagram made on purpose ? They did a mistake or it is an intentional move of Instagram, so they will be in the middle of the spotlight for several weeks?

Instagram shocks the world by adding a font similar to a hated one – Comic Cans. Let’s see where it started.

The history of Comic Sans

To understand why everybody hates Comic Sans, we need first to know its history.

Inspired by DC and Marvel comic books, Vincent Connare created Comic Sans in 1994 by using a mouse and cursor to draw intentionally sloppy letters.

Vincent designed the font for Microsoft home computers; Comic Sans was indented to be used in the speech bubbles of an animated cartoon dog that would help people navigate the Microsoft Windows interface for very first time.

Comic Sans was a perfect fit for its mission, as the Microsoft dog needed a special, playful font and he received it. The inspiration came from comic books.

Companies like Apple, Bmw and Burberry used with success Comic Sans in different applications like newspapers, titles, and store signs.

Why Comic Sans become the most hated font in the history?

Even Vincent Connare, the creator of Comic Sans, says about the font he created in 1994: “If you love Comic Sans you don’t know much about typography. And if you hate Comic Sans you need a new hobby.”

If you search the internet for Comic Sans font, you will find literally tons of hate messages, some being super funny, like this one.

The reason why Comic Sans became the number one enemy in the design world, is simple and can be easily explained in one short paragraph.

Nonprofessionals started to use Comic Sans everywhere – in formal documents, in emails, on signs, in ads, and even on billboards.

The Comic Sans font was not intended for this, and as any font used incorrectly, it will create a bad design.

The internet is still full of bad designs with Comic Sans and people without typography experience still use this font incorrectly.

Maybe it would be great to have How to use information for each font? This could have a huge impact in the typography world.

I know that some fonts have clear instructions of how to use them and for which scopes.

Comic Sans is a super good example of You need to carefully pick the font for your projects. If not, a disaster can occur.

Conclusions

It is a mystery why Instagram choose to add a font similar with the most hated in the world.

I think their ad agency did this super trick to attract huge attention. The cost is minimal and the impact was huge. This is what we all try to achieve with our ads, right?

And let’s be honest, is the font on Instagram unusable, or bad? No, it isn’t. We can easily use it with success on our stories.

Find here the best fonts for Instagram, an article wrote by us in 2019.
